In truth, her backstory ties into an important part of her character, which is defined by fierce independence. Kate's solution to this was to run away and join the circus, becoming an acrobat and picking up various tricks of the trade. She was taken in by an orphanage but found it stifling to her creative spirit and over-the-top exuberance. Her father then left soon thereafter, leaving her to fend for herself. He replied, "of course, Katie-Cat," using his pet nickname for her. Her last memory is of one such joyful day, as her father lifted her up with his strong arms, and she asked him if they could come back. She confesses to having no memories of her parents, with one prominent exception: Kate remembers that there was a millpond by her house when she was younger, which her father would take her to on occasion to swim in.
